Tell Us About Your Initiative

Although you may not nominate yourself for ARSC’s Award for Individual Initiatives, our committee members are always eager to hear from people whose work may be worthy of nomination.

Are you a creative, self-directed, self-funded individual whose independent initiatives are advancing the field of recorded sound? Tell us about them. What are they? How might they contribute to the field? What can they teach others? What can they teach others by example?

Criteria & Examples

Candidates are assessed on their initiatives' contributions to the field of recorded sound preservation, management, and study. Current initiatives are important, but so is a history of meaningful outcomes and the individual's potential to accomplish even more. Candidates may be:

  1. Developing technologies to facilitate the safe and effective transfer of audio recordings.
  2. Conserving primary source materials and research libraries related to sound recording.
  3. Advancing awareness of our audio heritage and the cultural benefits of preserving it.
  4. Contributing to audio-related STEM education both in and outside of the classroom.
  5. Managing websites that materially enhance universal access to historical audio.
  6. Conducting discographical research and cataloging in support of preservation.
  7. Documenting the historical outputs and activities of record companies.
  8. Curating, conserving, and broadly sharing collections of significance.
  9. Correcting and augmenting historical accounts of sound recording.
  10. Building systems to play recordings unplayable by existing means.
  11. Preserving and broadly sharing significant audio recordings.
  12. Advancing best conservation and preservation practices.
  13. Mentoring and sharing knowledge and expertise.
  14. Rescuing audio from damaged carriers.

Awards are not limited to these initiatives; they are provided as examples only.
